Is your halal meat slaughtered on the farm or in a USDA facility?
All of our meat is slaughtered and processed in a USDA slaughterhouse. Beef and chicken are slaughtered at separate facilities. For the beef slaughter, we are the only farm at the slaughterhouse the day we process and we use our own equipment, including grinder parts, knives and buckets. As soon as the meat is processed, we put them in vacuum sealed bags. We do this to ensure no cross contamination of any other meat.
Why are your prices higher than regular halal meat we buy at the supermarket?
We do not use petroleum based fertilizers, antibiotics, cheap GMO feeds, large feed lot fattening pens, or factory line slaughter plants, all of which are used to reduce the price of conventional meat. Finding and working with our suppliers, as well as making sure the whole process beginning to end, meets our standards takes tremendous ongoing time and effort. Our meat is the result of human scale artisanal methods, not an industrial process. So our prices may be higher, but the cost to you and your family’s health and the environment is much lower. We believe it’s worth the tradeoff.
Our shipping facility is in Kansas City, MO. All of our products come from NY, but we ship out of the mid-west so that all of our customers can get better shipping rates. You are also more than welcome to come to the farm to pick up meat, we are located at 180 Twin Arch Road, Rock Tavern, NY 12575.

Why does it matter if pesticides are used?
Children and fetuses are most vulnerable to pesticide exposure due to their less-developed immune systems and because their bodies and brains are still developing. Exposure at an early age can cause developmental delays, behavioral disorders, and motor dysfunction. Pregnant women are more vulnerable due to their hyper-metabolic state. Plus pesticides can be passed from mother to child in the womb, as well as through breast milk. Some exposures can cause delayed effects on the nervous system, even years after the initial exposure. Most of us have an accumulated build-up of pesticide exposure in our bodies due to numerous years of exposure. This chemical “body burden” as it is medically known could lead to health issues such as headaches, birth defects, and added strain on weakened immune systems.
At Halal Pastures, we pride ourselves on sourcing our meat from farmers who do not use chemical pesticides on their grass and many of them are ceritifed organic famers.
Can you elaborate on hormone treatments and its effects in animals?
To boost profits, some farmers give hormones to beef cattle and sheep to speed their growth and to dairy cows to increase milk production. The USDA does not allow hormones to be used on chickens. The extensive use of hormones (rBHG-free) in meat and dairy may increase the risk of cancer in humans and result in higher rates of infection in animals. Products labeled “organic” cannot come from rGBH-treated cows. There is no specific hormone-free certification, though organic and grass-fed labels do not allow hormone use.
Do you also sell organic fruits and vegetables?
Yes! We also sell eggs. You can purchase these items either at our farm at 180 Twin Arch Road, Rock Tavern, NY or our farm stands in NYC. You can see our market schedule here
Our vegetables are USDA certified organic, the poultry is certified organic organic, and the livestock is 100% grass-fed raised on certified organic grass. Please check out specific product pages for more information.
